“Spring Lights” concert by the Algarve Orchestra
The concert is part of the "Music on Campus" Concert Series.
About the concert
In a concert that celebrates spring, the main work is Richard Strauss’s Oboe Concerto, composed in 1945 in the aftermath of the nightmare of war, whose devastation the composer witnessed while remaining in Germany throughout the conflict. This music could not be more different from trauma and violence, instead marked by lightness and luminosity, making it truly springlike. The concerto will be performed by Luís Auñon Perez, making his debut as a soloist with the Algarve Orchestra.
Also featured is the equally light and fresh music of Wolf-Ferrari, a master of Italian modernism, as well as Fanny Mendelssohn, a composer we have been showcasing throughout this season. The programme concludes with Mozart’s Serenade, inspired by the bugle calls of 18th-century postilions, who announced the arrival of the mail with musical notes.
